As the students work through the lessons, they will gain knowledge and skills in the following areas:

·       Elements of art

o      Gauging the elements of art in abstract paintings

o      Overview and determination of colour schemes in abstract paintings

o      Black and white design

o      Complementary colour design

o      Developing a sense of depth

·       Principles of design

o      Evaluating the principles of art in abstract paintings

o      Recognising compositional structures in abstract paintings

o      Applying principles and compositional understanding to own design

o      Developing own inspiration into a concept and then a completed product

·       Use of materials

o      Texture effects: water dripping, wood graining, scratching, buffing,

o      Blending techniques: drybrush, wet brush, sponge, hands, cloth

o      Application techniques: window washer, bubble wrap, wood graining tool, spatula, palette knife, stencilling, fine line applicator, paper lifting, various mark making tools, squeegee,

o      Working with multiple layers

o      Applying collage elements

o      Various media: acrylic paint, oil paint, cold wax, collage papers, graphite or pigment powders, various acrylic mediums, chalk pastels, oil pastels, water-soluble wax paint


·       Art appreciation

o      Analysing art through formal analysis

o      Appreciating the value of abstract artists, both well-established and emerging

o      Understanding the thought process behind some abstract pieces

o      Finding inspiration in the things around us

o      Observing with a new perspective

o      Interpreting details as inspiration for painting

o      Learning to relax and enjoy the process of abstract art

o      Working to specific criteria

o      Seeing abstract painting as a process rather than a product
